Sushmita Sen (born 19 November 1975 in Hyderabad, India) is an Indian actress who appears in mainly Bollywood films. She is a former beauty queen, who was crowned Miss Universe 1994. She was the first Indian woman to be crowned Miss Universe.
In 1994, at the age of eighteen, Sushmita won the title of Femina Miss India beating Aishwarya Rai, who was the runner up. Sen represented India at the 1994 Miss Universe Pageant, held in Manila, Philippines and won.
Miss Universe 1994, the 43rd Miss Universe pageant, was held at the Philippine International Convention Center, in Manila, Philippines on May 20, 1994. It was Manila's second time to host the pageant, having hosted the Miss Universe 1974 pageant some twenty years earlier.
Sushmita Sen of India was crowned Miss Universe 1994 by outgoing titleholder Miss Universe 1993 Dayanara Torres of Puerto Rico,[1] besting early favorites Carolina Gómez of Colombia and Minorka Mercado of Venezuela who placed first and second runners-up, respectively. Sushmita Sen became the first Miss Universe titleholder from India.
